Ignite! Community Theatre presents their first annual Spokane Playwrights’ Booklight Showcase May 11, 12 and 13 in Spokane, Wash. Booklight Series productions are produced as “Reader’s Theatre”. As such, when you attend you will find the actors reading from the scripts, as well as limited blocking, costumes, or sets. The premise of these readings is to sit back and allow the voices of the actors take your mind and your imagination to where the playwright wants you to go – much like you do when you read a novel! They are fun and easy to be a part of (limited rehearsal time is needed and memorization is not required), and attending one is even easier because they are FREE! Of course donations are gratefully accepted, and seating is first come first seated. They are a great way to dip your toe into the Theatrical Process. This is the third of three presentations in the “Booklight” Series this season.

Performances will be held at the following locations:

MAY 11th, 7pm at Gonzaga University

May 12th, 7pm at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church

May 13th, 2pm at the Blue Door Theatre

This presentation features the winning entries from playwrights living within a 75-mile radius of Spokane. The submissions selected for performance (listed alphabetically by title) are:

Feminine Care by Matthew Weaver

Life Began In A Garden by Paul F. Ruch

Powerhouse by Olivia Dugan

Located in Spokane, Washington, Ignite! Community Theatre is dedicated to bringing theatre arts to more people of the Inland Northwest. They provide opportunities for involvement through fully-produced stage productions, reader’s theatre productions, and their annual haunted house “Riverfront Fright.”

Please join us at the Peacock Grill in Spokane’s historic Davenport Hotel for this favorite kNIFVES event on Thursday, May 10th from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Valet parking is free with your lunch receipt.

Our guests for this year’s panel are Dr. Pete Porter, Luke Baumgarten, and Tyler Wilson, three critics who represent a broad spectrum of the different roles of the film critic. The panel will talk about Critical Approaches to Understand and “Read” a Film, sharing with us their scholarly, journalistic, and digital age film buff perspectives. Film enthusiasts and filmmakers alike will enjoy this stimulating, engaging and thought provoking conversation.

Dr. Pete Porter teaches filmic arts history and theory/criticism at Eastern Washington University. He also serves as director of The Spokane International Film Festival. Before joining the film faculty in 2004, Porter earned a PhD from Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich. His dissertation argues that the ancient literary form Menippean satire, a travesty of The Odyssey, the work of Plato, and old comedy, has taken shape in movies from Duck Soup (1934) to The Big Lebowski (1998). Dr. Porter’s recent work studies media representations of non-human animals from a cognitive-ethical perspective.

Luke Baumgarten has been arts and culture editor, music editor and staff writer at The Inlander since 2005. Along with movie reviews and film criticism, he has covered the local music scene extensively and written about youth politics, art marketing, unionizing film crews, minor league baseball players, YouTube celebrities, aspiring break-dancers and Christian environmentalists. He is a Billboard Magazine contributing writer and has been published in Willamette Week, Philadelphia Weekly and the San Antonio Current. He studied philosophy and English literature at Gonzaga University.

Tyler Wilson has worked as a professional film critic for nearly 10 years. He was the Arts & Entertainment Editor at The Coeur d’Alene Press for three and a half years. He is a principal of Wilson Media Consulting, a web design and digital media consulting firm in North Idaho, and remains a film critic and guest correspondent for The Coeur d’Alene Press. He studied film, English and digital media at the University of Idaho. He writes reviews, articles and podcasts at www.NormdogEntertainment.com , a site for film reviews, videos and pop culture commentaries by Tyler Wilson and friends.

The meeting is free to members and first time visitors, $5 for repeat visitors. Details will be announced of upcoming kNIFVES events and the latest news regionally and nationally regarding film and media. Lunch can be ordered from an abbreviated luncheon menu, or from the regular menu.
